Successful Affiliate Marketing is About Building Relationships

One key factor in successful affiliate marketing is building relationships with other affiliate marketers and copywriters. While it’s possible to work from home in solitude and build your affiliate business, you’re leaving a lot of money on the table if you don’t reach out and connect with other marketers.

If you want to reach out and make contact with other affiliate marketers but don’t know how to do it, here are three ways you can become part of the “in” crowd and form relationships that will promote your business:

Join forums. There are many forums out there devoted to affiliate marketing, online marketing, and copywriting. Lurk awhile on a few of these forums to see how the dynamics work, and then register and become a regular contributor. Ease into your forum relationship. Understand that it takes time to learn the personalities of the other people on the forum, and it will take them some time to understand your personality, as well.

One mistake that some forum participants take is that they forget to be professional in their forum correspondence. You’ve got to remember that forums—unless private—are open to anyone who conducts an online search, so treat other people with respect. Know when and what to post, and stay away from the keyboard if you feel like typing something that can potential hurt your business.

Attend conferences. That’s right, you’ve got to break free from the mask of anonymity and go to a few marketing conferences. Here is where you’ll learn what the big guys know about affiliate marketing. Here’s the best part: you’ll get the chance to meet and greet other affiliate marketers. You can also hang out at the bar after hours and talk one-on-one with a lot of the conference participants. A lot of JV partnerships are formed as a result of casual conversation, so don’t hide in your hotel room at night.

Many of these conferences are pricey, but they’re worth the cost. Most participants agree that the connections they’ve formed were valuable, and they were able to easily make up the cost of the conference with profits that they earned as a result of attending. If you want to build your affiliate business, you’ll want to attend at least one conference a year to stay in contact and to meet other affiliate marketers.

Cold Calling. Unless you want to remain invisible, you’ll have to be proactive in getting the word out about your business. Browse websites of other affiliate marketers and find their contact information. E-mail them or better yet, pick up the phone and introduce yourself. Many new affiliate marketers have offered to barter their services in exchange for mentoring or coaching from established affiliate marketers. You won’t gain a thing if you don’t try.

Successful affiliate marketing is about much more than the product you create. If you really want to build your affiliate business and work from home, the relationships that you form will help you get to the top much faster than if you try to do it all alone.
